An atrium of exotic glass butterflies
Organ Donation Artwork for Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Wales
This artwork is not only a beautiful addition to the hospitals' entrance but was primarily commissioned to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. Key messages, 'Rhodd o Fywyd – Gift of Life' have colourful trailing letters that lead the eye to written messages about organ donation interspersed with flowing lines of fluttering butterflies.
Entrance to the hospital is through revolving doors into a 10 metre long corridor with a pitched glass roof that floods the area with natural light. We have utilised this site to the maximum, filling the atrium roof space with a new art piece to greet visitors and spread the word about the significance of organ donation.
As the atrium space is above normal sightlines we have also used sculpture to entice the viewer to look upwards and discover! This sculpture delights the eye with the enduring strength of polished steel and delicate laser cut calligraphy, refracting and reflecting more than 25 brilliantly coloured and patterned glass butterflies that flutter in suspension below.
