Garden of remembrance
Organ donation sculpture for Salisbury District Hospital
This public art is created from gleaming copper with an aged patina and features butterflies gathering into a heart shape, having fragile, lacy wing characteristics so that the garden can be viewed around and through the sculpture. Sunlight bouncing off its surfaces gives an incandescent quality, shimmering with reflected colours of nearby plant life.
Butterflies are a powerful symbol of metamorphosis and evoke a positive metaphor for the transformation donor recipient’s experience. We have chosen butterflies that are found around Salisbury to create a free-standing outdoor sculpture to stand amongst foliage and be a permanent memorial to organ donors.
Butterflies selected - Peacock, Purple Emperor, Red Admiral, Silver Wash Fritillary and Small Tortoiseshell.
“The sculpture is brilliant. What I was really struck by was it looked exactly like the 'mock-up' that you sent us. You have been amazing in your professional manner throughout.”
