George Blunden Public Art Prize 2021

Stonewater, a leading social housing provider, launched the George Blunden Public Art Prize this year to find a talented artist or artist group to produce creative artworks for five of its new affordable housing developments. More than 160 artists from all over the UK registered their interest in the inaugural contest to pitch ideas for art installations aimed at building community spirit and inspiring residents. We pitched two ideas for the competition and were thrilled to be one of the 6 finalists!
The Ammonite
Inspired by the ammonites in the Castle Cary and District Museum, this artwork demonstrates that this area of Somerset was once under the sea. Using simplified sculptural forms to replicate an ammonite, the artwork creates a focal point for the community. A multi-purpose space for all ages to reflect, sit on or clamber over.
Roundhouse Revisited
This artwork completely transforms a well-known feature of the town, the Castle Cary Round House. Instead of a place of detention this Round House is an open semi-circle to be constructed in metal rather than stone. Seating could be incorporated into the design and we suggested for it to be situated at an entrance to a community garden or wildflower meadow. This structure is meant to be a reservoir of information about the town. Therefore, all the cut-outs will be designed by the community.
